WHY VISIT THE COTSWOLDS?
The Cotswolds is one of the most beautiful and iconic regions in the world. From charming honey-coloured stone cottages and hidden villages to sweeping hills and breathtaking natural scenery, there are moments here when you truly feel transported to another time. The Cotswolds also boasts the highest concentration of conservation areas of any region in England — a testament to its preserved beauty and heritage.
Spanning nearly 3,000 miles of public footpaths, this rolling countryside is steeped in history. Evidence of settlement dates back to Neolithic times over 6,000 years ago, with prosperity flourishing during the medieval wool trade, which shaped many of the grand churches and market towns you see today.
The region is particularly renowned for its distinctive yellow limestone, used to build the villages and lively market towns that define its character. From the honey tones of the north to the richer golds of the central Cotswolds and the softer pearl hues of the south, each area has its own subtle identity, blending seamlessly into the surrounding green countryside.
With Undiscovered Cotswolds Tours, you’ll experience what truly makes the Cotswolds unlike anywhere else — not just its beauty, but its atmosphere, history, and quiet magic.
As J. B. Priestley once wrote of Cotswold stone:
“The truth is that it has no colour that can be described. Even when the sun is obscured and the light is cold, these walls are still faintly warm and luminous, as if they knew the trick of keeping the lost sunlight of centuries glimmering about them.”

During your Cotswolds tours from Oxford with Undiscovered Cotswolds Tours, you’ll discover far more than just pretty villages. We bring the landscape to life through fascinating stories, local knowledge, and centuries of history that shaped this extraordinary region.
The Cotswolds has been inhabited since Neolithic times, with ancient sites and burial mounds still visible across the countryside. As we travel through rolling hills and timeless villages, you’ll see how thousands of years of history have left their mark on the landscape.
During the medieval period, the Cotswolds became one of the wealthiest areas in England thanks to the wool trade. Cotswold wool was exported across Europe and beyond, financing the grand churches, manor houses, and market towns that still stand today. The prosperity of this era is woven into the very fabric of the villages you’ll visit on our small group and private tours from Oxford.
Although the wool industry has declined, the beauty it created remains. Honey-coloured limestone cottages, peaceful country lanes, and quiet brooks flowing through hidden valleys make the region feel almost untouched by time.
Our Cotswolds tours from Oxford are designed to give you a deeper understanding of the region — not just its postcard views, but the history, stories, and character that make it unlike anywhere else in the world.
My name is Ian, and I founded Undiscovered Cotswolds Tours in 2016 after living in the Cotswolds for many years. During that time, I uncovered countless hidden places, fascinating stories, and local insights that only someone who truly knows the area would discover. It’s a real pleasure to share them with guests from around the world.
Before starting my own business, I travelled extensively and lived in several different countries, meeting people from many cultures and backgrounds. I also worked as a tour operator for Audley Travel, one of the world’s most respected tailor-made travel companies. That experience shaped my belief that a great tour is about far more than simply “ticking off” famous locations.
Of course, seeing iconic villages and landmarks is important — but the real difference lies in the pace, comfort, and atmosphere of the day. We don’t rush from place to place. Instead, we take the time to truly enjoy each village, scenic viewpoint, and hidden corner. With small group sizes (limited to just seven guests), the experience remains relaxed, personal, and comfortable.
I genuinely want you to have a wonderful time. I work hard to ensure each tour feels special, memorable, and thoughtfully crafted — always willing to go the extra mile to make your day unforgettable.
